How to Choose a Real Estate Attorney in Connecticut

Whether you’re selling or purchasing residential or commercial real estate, it’s always a good idea to seek the guidance of an experienced Connecticut real estate attorney. However, real estate attorneys have varying levels of competence and experience, so you should make sure that you do your homework before making a final decision. Below are some tips to help you get started.

1) Meet with your prospective attorney in person - It’s important to choose a real estate attorney who’s willing to meet with you in person. Since you will be working closely with your attorney, it’s important to make sure that he or she is someone you feel comfortable with, and this can be difficult to determine over the phone.

2) Seek out recommendations - A great way to choose an experienced Connecticut real estate attorney is to request recommendations from friends and loved ones. In addition, if you know any attorneys who practice in other areas of the law, it can be helpful to ask them if there are any experienced real estate attorneys they’d recommend.

3) Discuss cost - Legal representation costs money, so it’s important to understand exactly what your financial obligations will be when consulting with a prospective real estate lawyer. Attorney fees are typically based on things like level of experience, location, case complexity, and other factors. When speaking to a prospective attorney, it can be helpful to ask him or her what the total cost of representation was for clients in similar situations to your own.

4) Take your time – While some real estate issues require urgency, it’s important to take your time when choosing an attorney. When in a time crunch, it can be tempting to hire the first real estate attorney you meet with. However, this can often create more problems than it solves. Remember, patience is your ally when choosing a Connecticut real estate attorney.

5) Avoid attorneys who make extravagant promises - While some real estate lawyers have excellent track records and have produced outstanding results, no attorney should ever guarantee a particular result. Therefore, if you encounter an attorney who makes extravagant promises regarding your case, you should probably look elsewhere.
